Function / Content

This series consists of annotated and final versions of Alice Springs Hospital handbooks. The handbooks were a record of regulations to be followed by all medical and nursing staff. The regulations had been compiled with the object of unifying and integrating administrative procedures for Darwin and Alice Springs hospitals. In 1975, the hospital rules included various topics ranging from the admission of patients to the evacuation of patients interstate and within the Northern Territory. Procedures relating to radiography, laboratory services and disaster procedures were included at the back of the handbook (volume no.1, box no.1). By 1983, the heavily annotated handbook included copies of departmental notices relating to legal representation of staff (volume no.9, box no.1). Some language used in these records (which reflects the language used at the time the records were created) may be offensive. This series may contain references to Aboriginal people who have died, which may cause sadness and distress to their relatives. No offence has been intended by making these records available. Care and discretion should be used when viewing these records.
